How to start journaling in 5 simple steps

Have you been intending to start a journal but do not where to start?

Maybe the thought of writing a dear diary kind of journal scares you or you think that your handwriting isn’t the greatest.

Is it that you just hate writing because you really never know what to write.

However, you still really want to start a journal and have no idea where to start.

In today post I will take you through the simple steps to start your own journal.

What is journaling

In simple words, journaling is writing whatever comes to your mind.

Maybe you had a really annoying day at work or school or you just started your business. Maybe the coffee you ordered today was a bit too hot.

Write it.

Yes, its that’s simple and really that’s what journaling is. Writing or recording down on paper your daily activities and thoughts.

There are very many kinds of journals but it all comes down to letting your thoughts go through writing them down somewhere.

Keep in mind that you do not have to write it down on traditional pen and paper, you can also keep your journal on your phone or laptop.

Benefits of journaling

Are you still skeptical about journaling and asking yourself whether or not journaling has any benefits?

First off, its free and you can do it at the comfort of your own bed at whatever time you wish. There aren’t any rules really, you just write what you feel like writing.

There are numerous benefits of journaling which include

In order to start journaling, follow this simple steps

1.Know your why

This is very important because having a reason matters a great deal. This will help you to stay consistent with it since you know what you want to achieve.

You don’t have to have a big ice breaking why. Your reason can be as simple as tracking your daily mood or habits.

2.Get the supplies you will need

Journaling is all about you so get whatever you like.

You do not need to break your bank account by getting expensive books and stationery. A good old simple notebook and pen will do.

Use supplies that will make your journaling enjoyable and fun.

3.Schedule

Get clear on what time you will journal and where you will do it.

Maybe in the morning when you wake up or in the evening before going to bed.

4.Just start

This is quite obvious but the most difficult step. Getting your foot in can be the most difficult part but once you start everything will flow naturally.

You will be able to know what you enjoy writing about, where enjoy doing it etc.

Do not overthink it and do not try to be perfect.

There is no right or wrong just do what makes you feel comfortable.

If you are having a hard time with getting what to write, you can try using journal prompts.

5.Do not judge or censor yourself.

Be consistent and adjust accordingly. Journaling is meant to be insightful and enjoyable and not a task to check of your to do list. If it starts to feel like an obligation, go back to your why and adjust accordingly.

Reflect on what is causing the negative feeling such as is it taking up too much time, are you struggling with what to write, do you dislike how your handwriting looks.
