Having a relaxing night routine is important because it helps you wind down and prepare your body to rest after a long day.

A night routine is anything you do before bed every day.

Getting enough sleep is crucial for a healthy mind and body.

Your night partially affects how your day will be. 

If you stay up till the wee hours of the morning and still have to wake up to go to school or work, you will most likely feel very tired and sleepy throughout the day.

If you want to create a better nighttime ritual for better days and a good night’s sleep, here are some night routine ideas you can add to your nighttime routine.

Make a nice meal

A good night starts with nice, light, delicious, and nutritious meals.

Eating a heavy meal just before bed might make you feel too full and bloated and disrupt your sleep.

Eating a few hours before bed is also recommended so that by the time you are going to sleep your food is already settled in your tummy.

Listen to relaxing music

I love some jazz music playing in the background. It’s very relaxing and soothing for me.

Play music that makes you feel relaxed and play it in the background as you eat or go about your activities in the house during the night.

Watch a nice movie or cartoon

Watching a movie that you enjoy will help you relax and take your mind off your busy and hectic day.

Clean up your space

Putting away the dishes and tidying up the house for a few minutes will set you up for a good morning when you wake up.

Waking up to an untidy house in the morning might throw you off and irritate you.

Make a cup of tea

Tea has great health benefits for your digestive health especially after taking a meal.

Tea also helps calm the body and promote a peaceful night’s sleep.

Prep for the next day

Prepping for the next day is a crucial step for a relaxing and peaceful night of sleep.

Many times I stayed up wide awake thinking about what tasks I need to complete the following day, how I will do them when I will do them, and so on.

Planning gets those thoughts out of your heads and into paper or your phone.

This will help you to worry less about the details.

You can do this by writing a to-do list before going to bed and breaking down what needs to be done into smaller tasks.

For example, if you have to go out and run some errands, don’t write run errands instead of breaking them down into smaller activities like going to the market, picking up a parcel, etc.

Lay out your clothes for the next day.

I have in the past stayed up almost all night thinking about what to wear the next day.

To avoid this just lay out the clothes you would like to wear the next day.

If needed try them on to see if you like how the outfit looks. 

Put away all gadgets

Being on your phone before going to bed is not healthy and this might affect your sleep. The chances also of scrolling through your phone aimlessly are higher before going to bed.

Put away any gadgets 30 minutes before going to bed.

Take a relaxing bath or shower

Having a nice hot shower after a long day helps to make you feel very relaxed and in a way wash off some of the tiredness.

Wash your face and moisturize

It is important to care for your skin by removing all the dirt it has been exposed to throughout the day.

Do your skincare routine every night before going to bed and never sleep with makeup on.

Moisturize your body

Moisturizing your body with a lavender-based moisturizer will make you feel more calm and relaxed.

Burn a relaxing scent

Scents like lavender are very relaxing and will help you to feel calm.

Put on comfy pajamas

Brush your teeth

Remember to take good care of your teeth by brushing and flossing before going to bed.


Drink a glass of water to stay hydrated throughout the night.


Write down whatever is in your mind and heart.

This will help you to stop thinking about those things as you try to sleep.

This will help you reflect on your day and get to find out what you are feeling at that particular moment.


This will help relieve muscle tension and prepare you for a peaceful night’s sleep.

Dim the light

Having dimmer lights in your room will make you feel more drowsy and if you are anything like me, I won’t have to feel afraid of sleeping in the dark.

Pray and meditate

Go to sleep
