How I balance running a blog and being in University

I started this blog in around May of 2021 and posted my first blog post towards the end of June 2021.

At that time I was in my third year in Uni and had a lot on my plate.

I am currently doing my degree in Journalism and Mass Communication and will hopefully graduate in the next few months.

I have somehow found a balance between juggling running my blog and school work.

Some days are more hectic than others and at times I kind of ‘neglect’ my blog because I have no one helping me to run this blog.

This means that I have to wear many capes all at once.

Of course my school work will always come first, meaning that I schedule my blog to dos around school work and assignments.

I will share some tips on how I manage to balance the two for anyone who also has a blog and is also working or in school.

Write down all the things you need to get done for your blog that month and structure your days around school work.

The key to finding balance is planning ahead and goal setting.

For example, my goal usually is to upload at least 4 blog posts per month, create Pins for my posts and pin at an interval of one to two days.

My biggest goal at the moment is increasing my traffic and I do this by promoting my blog on Pinterest. This is the task that takes up most of my time since I need to constantly make and post pins.

Therefore on my monthly to do list I have;

  1. Research and write 4 blog posts.
  2. Do keyword research.
  3. Make a total of 30 pins and pin at least 5 times a week.
  4. Respond to comments
  5. Monitor Pinterest analytics
  6. Learn more about Pinterest SEO.

I also write out my school to do list for that month which might look like;

1. Purpose to attend all my classes this month, do assignments and review my notes after each lecture.

After doing this, I then write out in each day of the month what I need to do starting with the most important ones such as attending class, reviewing notes and assignments.

We are usually given projects earlier on so this way I am able to plan them out early.

Batch similar tasks together.

This is very important so that you can finish doing the tasks that are similar in nature or will take the shortest amount of time.

For example if I have an assignment that requires me to research on a particular topic, I usually batch it with doing research on the blog post topics I will be writing about that week.

Similarly, if I have an assignment that requires me to make some graphics, I will batch that with making Pinterest Pins.

Running a blog is not easy, so take it easy

School is already hectic and tiring by itself and adding running a blog on top of that is not a walk in the park.

Most especially if you have no help and you are doing all the work single handedly, make sure to take it easy on yourself and set realistic goals and expectations.
